Rules

The race rules issued by Reykjavik Sport Union (Suzuki Midnight Sun organiser) function as a framework for the execution of the Suzuki Midnight Sun race, the goal is to ensure the smooth functioning of the event and the greatest enjoyment of the participants.

The Suzuki Midnight Sun is governed by the rules for road races issued by IAAF—the International Association of Athletics Federations—which can be viewed at iaaf.org. Beside those rules, the Suzuki Midnight Sun is also governed by the following rules issued by the Reykjavik Sport Union.

  1. Race participants are responsible for acquainting themselves with the rules pertaining to participation in the Suzuki Midnight Sun Run and for adhering to those rules in every way. Failure to abide by the rules may lead to disqualification.
  2. All those participating in the Suzuki Midnight Sun Run do so at their own responsibility.
Children are the responsibility of their parents.
The race course is not completely closed for traffic so it is very important to exercise caution.
  3. Participants must start the race at the time advertised. The timing system is only in operation at that moment (see further information here).
  4. Timing will stop three hours after the start of the first distance. Runners arriving at the finishing area after those three hours have elapsed will not get a registered time.
  5. Participants must wear their bib numbers clearly visible on the front of their running attire for the entire duration of the race. Each bib number is registered to a particular runner and is only valid for that individual. Any deviation from this will result in the non-validation of the runner's time.
  6. Participants will get bib number with built in timing chip. Participants are responsible for ensuring that the bib is registered to their names and that it is only used by the person registered for the chip. The bib number has to be fastened to the front of the t-shirt. If a participant fails to do this, the following rule applies: "No bib number—no time" (see further information here).
  7. Those who run a different distance than the one they registered for will not be timed and are not valid participants.
  8. Specific age limits apply for each distance in the Suzuki Midnight Sun Run, as follows.
The 21.1 km half marathon is for runners 15 years of age or older.
The 10 km race is for runners 12 years of age or older and is not recommended for younger children.
Runners of all ages may register for the 5 km.
  9. Participants are required to study the race route and to run only on the course laid out by the organisers.
The course is reserved for race participants. Runners may not be accompanied or followed by persons on foot, riding a bicycle or using any other type of vehicle. It is the responsibility of each participant to refuse being accompanied by anyone who attempts to do so.
  10. Suzuki Midnight Sun Run reserves the right to deny access to any person riding a bicycle or driving a vehicle on the course or close to running participants.
  11. Participants may not receive assistance in the form of food, drink or physical support from any person other than race staff, except in emergencies. The race manager shall be informed of any such incidents.
  12. No dogs or other pets are allowed on the race course.
  13. Participants are prohibited from bringing strollers/pushchairs or prams onto the course.
  14. The use of electricity powered- or motorised vehicles, bicycles, scooters, inline skates, skateboards, roller skis or hand cycles is not authorised.
  15. Those making use of nordic walking poles must line up behind other participants at the beginning of the race.
  16. For security reasons, those participating in a wheelchair or using other assistive equipment must line up behind other participants at the beginning of the race.
  17. Participants shall behave politely toward all race staff and abide by their guidance and instructions.
  18. Participants shall show consideration for other runners and keep in mind the rules of the road.
  19. Prizes for the top three places will only be awarded if three or more participate in each gender category in each distance.
  20. Those who have completed the race may not re-enter the course in order to join other participants who are still running.
  21. Any kind of indecent behaviour, indifference to the law or disrespect for human sanctity and human rights can lead to expulsion from the race.
